i never really thought about the term “american” in that way. very interesting. you make a good point.
however…..i have met a ton of people from different parts of the america’s……canada, colombia, mexico, brazil, venezuela, peru, etc. who also refer to people who live in the USA as americans and who never consider themselves americans. so, although i think you make a good point, i have not experienced anyone being offended by such a term. on the contrary, i have experienced people from other countries actually using the term.
i know my experience is limited and i am not saying you are wrong. i am however curious if you have ever met any non-US citizen who was offended by this term.
