Up in the Golan Heights here in Israel there are still hundreds of thousands of land mines from when Jordan pulled out in the 1960s. It's too expensive to try to clean them all up, so they have signs and barbed wire everywhere to mark the minefield. At least one person a year gets careless and crosses the line. It changed my perspective on the issue when I was able to see a minefield up close and understand what kind of damage it does. Nasty things, they are. It is also unfortunate that it's too expensive (and probably too dangerous as well) to take on a task that will save human life and free up land.
